Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise, has stated that the increasing popularity of the use of social networking sites has produced a decrease in the popularity of porn sites.

Sites like Facebook and Myspace has been rapidly attracting young adults by frequently adding new features which allows users to interact in many ways.

Porn or Facebook?

Since people are using these networking sites more regularly, they eventually put aside the porn. Facebook is very time consuming, and for some, is the best getaway method for boredom.

Obviously, people’s interest in porn will never decrease. However, they need time to search for it on the internet, but the fact that social networking is taking over, it drives their minds off porn for a while. Strangely, there are even porn ads on facebook from time to time, but surely it isn’t as good as the real thing.

Below is a graph showing the decreasing, and increasing popularity of internet searches (porn, networking, search engines)

Although the graph may be said as outdated, it shows the chances of networking sites’ takeover of the internet usage.

Mark Brender, a GeoEye spokesman states that the new satellite will provide the highest resolution at .41 meters in black and white and 1.65 meters in color, which means that it will be able to track/trac even people. So if you want privacy, you should stay home.

Google’s spokeswoman, Kate Hurowitz says that google will be receiving new images in another 45-60 days. However, they still are planning on receiving images from other providers.

Following up on the facebook redesign, it is still pending. Multiply.com believes that facebook copied its design page, causing the delay of the launching.

Multiply.com hasn’t filed a lawsuit against facebook, but has made more claims on facebook copying almost everything.

Below is a chart created by multiply, which is believed to be an act of competition against facebook.

The chart clearly tries to make facebook seem like the bad one. Meanwhile, other social sites like myspace, has been adding features similar to those in facebook, so multiply doesn’t really have a point.

Online criminals target social networking sites

Unfortunately, at the moment i do not have a specific visible example that i can show to the class. But I will keep trying to find examples.

The article by Darren Osborne talks about how social networking sites are becoming the number one target for criminals online.

The latest Symantec Internet Security Threat Report for the second half of 2007 reveals there were 87,963 “phishing hosts” for that period, an increase of 167 per cent from the first half of 2007. ”

Symantec Australia managing director Craig Scroggie said social networking websites were a treasure trove of personal data, listing information such as birthdate, location and employment history.

Social network sites are the main target because it is quite easy to get certain information just by looking at a person’s profile. When you fall for the phishing traps, the phishing hosts can get access to your login and password details.

An article from way back (http://www.news.com/Congress-targets-social-networking-sites/2100-1028_3-6089574.html) tells us about how the congress relied on social networking sites such as myspace, to track their users activity, to avoid any online criminal act in the future.

Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites are very popular amongst most internet users. They can be used just to keep in touch with friends, run a business, and maybe for educational purposes. These networking sites makes it easier for people to stay in touch with their friends because they are kept  up to date with their friends latest information. Whatever updates are made by users will be shown in their circle of friends’ latest information area.

social networking

In mashable.com there is a list of 350+ popular social networking sites sorted by category, which is business, friends, college, music, and some more. Of course there are more than 350 social networking sites all around, but these are just the ones which are considered ‘most common’ for people. Popular sites like myspace and facebook are on the list.

A logo of college.com, the social network site mainly used for college students. The logo even tells you what you can do in the site!

Most of these social networking sites are used for a short period of time, possibly because there aren’t many members and the site is just not interesting enough to make them stay longer. There are too many networking sites on the net, and people wouldn’t want to sign up for all of them. So they have to choose, and sometimes a site is better than others.
